Practicing Ashtanga Yoga Mysore-style

The Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga system was developed in Mysore, India and is the traditional way this system of yoga is taught. Both Ant and Helen have learned (and continue to learn) this way and feel strongly that it’s the most empowering, rewarding and nourishing way to impart the practice. They are passionate about sharing ashtanga with anyone and everyone who wants to learn.

So... What exactly IS Mysore-style?!

In a Mysore-style class, students practise the Ashtanga sequences at their own pace. The teacher/s will continually move around the room working one-on-one with students, rather than standing at the front demonstrating and leading everyone together. A Mysore class is quieter than most yoga classes. You will hear the teacher talking to individual students but the main sound will be the ujjayi breath – a rhythmic breath that sounds like the ocean – that is used when practicing ashtanga. They also tend to be longer than led classes because you have flexibility to arrive whenever you want (as long as you leave enough time for your practice, of course!).

As a beginner, in your first practice you will be taught the breathing and some initial postures. Over time, you will learn progressively more asanas at a pace that is right for you. This allows you to develop strength and flexibility sustainably and learn the practice in an individualised manner. It also means you can make adaptations where needed to suit your body; for example using props or adding in some extra preparation work. The teacher will offer physical and verbal adjustments which you can accept if you want them. This style of practicing means you will hopefully build a strong relationship with your teacher over time and they will be better placed to support you throughout your practice.

With sustained practise, the sequencing of the specific movements will become familiar to you. As the body starts to remember where it is going, focus is directed inwards towards the breath and the sensations of your body. The method evolves towards a moving meditation. It also becomes your own practice to take with you wherever you are - all you need is a bit of space and a yoga mat (or just a towel!).

For more experienced students, Mysore-classes will give you the opportunity to explore more complex and advanced postures that are rarely approached in led classes. You will get personalised support from your teacher to learn and develop these asanas over time.
